village mulshi
On way to a trip, i stoppedby to see this scenic village and liked it very much for its rustic charm.
I have deleted cows and hens from the picture as i cant draw them!! I have not kept record of what has been posted,so may be this is a repeat for some!...I dont necessarily use actual true colours of scene, but in this case houses were painted in this shades.i think its local mud colour.

stone bridge.
Such stone constructed bridges are found in india all over. This one is at wai. This bridge is located over a river which has temples on both banks. So it is an artists delight to paint the temples using bridge arches as a framing element. This is one such attempt. There is hardly any water flowing under the bridge!

effect of water !
After almost finishing my painting, it slipped out of my hands and fell on dusty ground. All the muck and loose earth got stuck to the painting.I just put my painting under running water tap and washed off the muck. But it gave me a totally different painting after drying.I tried this again deliberately just to see the effect of water on painting. Basically any excessive colour which is not absorbed in paper gets washed off and a very uniform colour is achieved. In east bengal this is supposed to be a mastered technic, which i came to know later! They dry it after washing, apply new layers and repeat this process many times!! i have never tried it as i use only 180 gsm paper mostly...You all can try it and share your experiences.

tower
i have painted this tower at least 5 times till now.Every time i start with lot of enthusiasm, but always end up just painting upper portion only. The details of this british era buildings are too complicated for me! i have tried to show light play on tower rather than showing intricate details of mouldings etc.The lower portion is left blanck. Its a landmark structure in university campus, and once used to be a governers residence before independence. Its built in local stone and it looks majestic!

excercise in abstraction.
I teach as a visiting professor at college of architecture, the subject is basic design in architecture. In one of the exercises given to students they were told to transform an realistic scene to absrtaction step wise.I am sharing a work of a student with you.
1) step one is selecting any photograph and copying it in any medium like watercolours, oil pastels etc. This gives them the feel of the medium as well as study of the painting.
2)Then con verting this painting into black and white masses,Both negative and positive spaces in painting are highlighted in reverse ways.
3)After this simplification, they were told to take prominant lines in paintings and add few of their own lines to start a compositon, this was an interesting stage as individual thinking stated to immerge.
4)After this stage a last stage was to interprete this by using textures, like paper collage,or granular textures etc.
I enjoyed this process of students very much.We also need to cut lot of frills, extra baggages from our paintings and life!! thats the lesson i leart from this.
I would like allof you to share your views .I know this is not the only method or meaning of abstraction, but felt like sharing it !!

split painting
When i finished painting of a street seen in one point prspective, i realised that the perspective has gone wrong! but when i saw it care fully, i knew that if i split the painting in two parts,it looks ok.
So thses are two parts of a same painting, individually having correct perspective, but wrong as one painting! Try and figure it out yourself!

historical house
this is a painting of Nana Phadnis house in menavali near wai.The morning painting is done sitting crosss legged on floor .I have a habbit of sitting either on floor or any permanant bench or steps.I dont carry a folding chair ...like many do. have never used eissel either. I just hold my paper pad at an angle on lap and paint.I dont wear good clothes when on outdoor paintings,as inveriably i splash colours on them.!!
This painting is of an house of historical personality Nana.It is crumbling due to non mentainence.I hope heritage commitee does something about it. wood and morter structure is the construction method used in this house.

arches
Framing of a view is very important lesson we architects learn in our practice. We design buildings to look good from outside, but at the same time, it is very important to frame views from inside.Sucess of any building is how you see things inside out,as they are designed for occupants! These two paintings are inside outside paintings .I do such spots when sun is too hot or it is raining!!

sketchbook painting.
Posting a sketchbook painting ,with both photos to understand the scale of painting.
As it is a challenge to paint on bigger canvass, it is also a difficult task to convey on small scale. It is like a full feature film against an 30 second advertisements to reachout to people. Both equally challenging. On smaller paper, the only joints we can move is fingertips, hence the strokes of any kind are difficult to achieve. Also a palm support on suface is not possible,so one has to hold a hand mid air while painting and that is difficult to keep steady!.I enjoy both the scales!!

temple at wai.
The steps leading to river water are always an interesting element to paint.Difficult to show too!
all kind of activities are on these steps like washing clothes to washing buffelows!!many artists have built their carrers on ghats( steps) on rivers paintings. This i have done from a photograph!!,a rare thing ! I think i have lost the looseness in this painting,it is too perfect for my liking.Once in a while i do painting from photograph, just to get back to actual spot.
